Ft. Wayne, Indiana burn center treats Afghan child

Tuesday, July 12, 2005

Doctors at the regional burn center at St. Joseph Hospital in Fort Wayne, Indiana are treating a patient flown in from war-torn Afghanistan.

U.S. Army’s 113th Battalion, which is made up of Indiana National Guardsman, discovered five-year-old Zia after a propane explosion in suburban Kabul earlier this year destroyed homes and killed six of the boy’s family members.

The blast left Zia with third degree burns on his arms, torso and legs. Guardsmen, familiar with the Fort Wayne burn center, worked with non-profit group, Northeast Indiana Burn Council to raised $18,500 to fly Zia, accompanied by his father Abdul Qahir, to Fort Wayne for treatment.

Upon arrival, he was rushed to the St. Joseph burn unit, where after a few days of recovery from travel, underwent his first surgery June 23. The second and final surgery was postponed nine days from an original date of July 2 because the boy developed an infection in one of his wounds, which is common for burn patients.

The second surgery grafted skin onto burn wounds on Zia’s arm, chest and the second toe on his right foot. Tuesday, doctors said Zia was recovering and appeared to be in good spirits. In preparation for their planned return trip to Afghanistan in September, doctors are teaching Zia’s father physical therapy techniques needed for further recovery. “Without good therapy, he could be right back where we started,” Dr. John Mancoll, the lead surgeon on the case, said in an interview with the Fort Wayne Journal Gazette newspaper.

Record number of bicycles sold in Australia in 2006

Thursday, January 4, 2007

Bicycle sales in Australia have recorded record sales of 1,273,781 units for 2006, exceeding car sales by 32 percent. It is the fifth year in a row that the bicycle industry has sold more than one million units, a figure yet to be realised by car manufacturers.

The Cycling Promotion Fund (CPF) spokesman Ian Christie said Australians were increasingly using bicycles as an alternative to cars. Sales rose nine percent in 2006 while the car market stalled. Mr Christie said people were looking to cut their fuel costs and improve their fitness.

Mr Christie said organisations were beginning to supply bicycles as a company vehicle. “There is an emerging trend towards people using bikes as their official company-supplied vehicle in place of the traditional company car,” he said.

“Some of Australia’s biggest corporations now have bicycle fleets, and when you add in government organisations, we now know of at least 50 organisations which operate fleets of bikes.”

“Although the company bicycle is a long way from taking over from the company car, it’s an important trend when you consider that nearly half of all cars sold are to company fleets.”

The CPF claims most commutes to work are less than 5 kilometres (3 miles) making bicycle travel a viable alternative.

As winter months comes to a halt while the temperature starts warming up, the springtime would be a good time for you recharge the safety components of your automobile. This is certainly because the salt that’s applied to your roads during a snowstorm can be an actual hazard towards the protective properties of the car’s application of wax. Path salt’s corrosive properties eat away at your wax security. If left for sufficient time, the soil and salt from the roadways can totally get rid of the protective properties of numerous waxes and paint sealants. Without wax on the automobile your clearcoat will be contaminated, since well as your vehicle will not be able to remain as clean so lengthy as it can be with new coat of wax (since the improved slickness of a waxed area lowers the capability of dirt and rainfall from sticking onto the area). While there is a large likelihood that your particular wax security ended up being compromised, a comprehensive clay barring therapy prior to waxing would be a great option to start the newest period.

As summer time gets near you should prepare their automobiles for comfortable conditions plus the sun’s damaging UV rays. This suggests your paint should have a fresh layer of wax to avoid the sun from fading your paint, especially red-colored automobiles, since this color is the most at risk of oxidation. Having a brand new coating of wax additionally facilitates easier removal of pests and tar from the front end of the vehicle. CP Car Detailing also wants to focus on using a wax or paint sealant to all outside house windows in order to make operating when you look at the rainfall much safer and easier. At highway rates you shouldn’t have to utilize windshield wipers due to the fact rain will bead and travel off the windshield in a really dramatic fashion. When interior detailing, products should be dressed with an item that includes UV inhibitors to avoid the sunlight from prematurely fading and cracking the surfaces. Because the temperature ranges increase, your brakes pads will create more brake dirt, which means that your tires should be waxed as well to make certain no brake dirt etches into the wheel’s area.

Fall detailing is focused on organizing for winter months. Considering that the temperatures are manageable at this time around, you should add just as a great deal protection as possible towards the outside of this vehicle prior to your first snowfall to ensure you can battle the detrimental outcomes of road sodium. To guarantee the many protection feasible, CP Car Detailing indicates using more durable paint sealants and car waxes, as well as the program of numerous coats.

Winter detailing is focused on avoidance. If at all possible you need to clean their particular car because much since possible to guarantee no build-up of roadway salt on painted areas. The longer road sodium remains on a cars surface, the greater amount of time the salt features to consume away at your wax’s safety components. Using advantage of warmer temperatures to wax your car with a durable car wax or paint sealant will ensure minimal lack of protection throughout the season. During winter months additionally, it’s crucially vital to reduce contact with the paint. Exactly what this indicates is DO never remove snow from your vehicle’s painted surfaces with an ice scrapper or comb. This really is probably the absolute most detrimental steps you can take to your automobile, which can end up in hefty swirling and scratching of your paint. Making use of some form of heating factor or warm water will safely melt the snow without damaging your paint. If you need to get rid regarding the snowfall on your own automobile, use a microfiber bath towel and gently and slowly use downwards motions, starting at the top regarding the car and moving downwards with each stroke. This ensures you are perhaps not introducing dust from the base associated with the automobile into the top portions of this vehicle.

Canadian university students would prefer MP3 players over car radios

Friday, March 30, 2007

At Wilfrid Laurier University in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada, students are finding that popular MP3 players, such as Apple’s iPod, are very convenient devices for listening to music at the gym, while traveling on foot, and in the car.

In a recent ad-hoc survey conducted by Wikinews contributor Darren Mar, 150 students were randomly pulled aside in the hallways of the university, and asked if they own an MP3 player. 94 of the 150 students (62.66%) did in fact own MP3 devices, most of who were found to be carrying it on them when questioned. There was one simple follow up question for those who had a player: “If it were possible to have complete and safe control of the device on the steering wheel of a car, would you rather listen to your device, or the radio?” There were three answers possible, yes, no or both. Of the 94, 78 (82.98%) said yes, eleven (11.70%) said no, and five (5.32%) said both. The reporting took place primarily on March 16, 2007. The reasons for those who would listen to their device were commercial free music, personalized choice of music, and complete control of what you are listening to.

This study was motivated by the new design of 2006+ model cars. Many are being built with auxiliary jacks for the stock radio, allowing the driver to easily connect any audio playing device to the car’s sound system with a simple 3.5mm plug. What’s more, cars in the upper price echelon are being built with (1) a custom made area in the dash for MP3 players (iPod’s being the most popular), and (2) implementing audio device control right onto the steering wheel. A good example of this is the Ford Fusion or the 2007 Lexus IS250: “The centre console input port allows an iPod, MP3 or Windows Media Audio player to be plugged into the IS audio system.”

PostHeaderIcon What’s The Difference Between A Dermawand And Derma Rollers?}

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

Submitted by: Marie Herik

Both the DermaWand and derma rollers are used for skin rejuvenation and anti-aging. Both are also used to obtain natural facelifts, if you will. While there are many brands of derma rollers, a DermaWand is a unique device and is a popular brand name product thats been around for a number of years. Derma rollers, on the other hand, are relatively new facial devices just surfacing as important in the past year or so. So, what exactly is the difference between a DermaWand and derma rollers?

While both of these facial devices are said to be highly effective in facial rejuvenation, they work quite differently. The DermaWand creates a series of very small electrical impulses that produce a powerful facial massage. These impulses work on your skin to stimulate circulation, draw oxygen and nutrients to the surface and revitalize your facial appearance.

The electrical massage of the DermaWand is said to be roughly a hundred times more effective than a standard facial massage. Because the massaging action of the Derma Wand is so concentrated, results are more immediately visible. The micro-current massage of the Derma Wand can lead to a very visible and quick reduction in fine lines and wrinkles even with the first treatment. Also, the DermaWand produces enriched oxygen that helps cleanse and purify the skin.

Some of the benefits of DermaWand Use:

– Sagging skin appears lifted and toned

– Wrinkles begin to fade and over time, disappear altogether

– Eye bags and puffiness are eliminated

– Poor skin texture and large pores are restored for a clearer and brighter complexion

YouTube Preview Image

– Line lines are eliminated, lips plumped

The DermaWand has been on the market for several years which speaks to its popularity as a successful natural face lift device. It is also relatively inexpensive for the results its capable of producing.

Easy to use anytime, the DermaWand is also lightweight and portable.

This product does indeed do what it claims to do, again, as evidenced by its longevity in the marketplace, testimonials and its continued popularity.

Derma rollers, on the other hand, are manual skin and facial devices that are relatively new in the market. They are based on ancient acupuncture techniques of micro needling which immediately adds credibility to their working potential.

A derma roller (like a hair brush) has a handle with a small roller attached to the end of it. Roughly 200 or so micro needles are embedded in this roller. By rolling a derma roller back and forth 4-6 times across and sideways over certain types of skin imperfections, skin pores are parted. In doing so, collagen production is stimulated.

As most of us are aware, collagen is essential to firm skin and collagen production decreases as we age.

Derma rollers claim to be able to reduce or eliminate the following:

– Wrinkles and sagging skin

– Acne and surgical scars

– Cellulite

– Hair loss and thinning

Derma rollers work very gradually over time building collagen and thickening the skin. Different length needles are recommended for different skin conditions as well. While the .05 length is considered a standard, safe needle length for general facial rejuvenation and wrinkle prevention, longer needles are used for deeper skin imperfections. Derma rollers can also be used on skin problems all over the body. Additionally, since the tiny needles penetrate skin, deeper absorption of nutrient rich skin creams is possible.

While derma rollers present an exciting new option for anti-aging facial appearance, there are caveats to consider prior to use. They should not be used on any inflamed skin areas for example. Prudence or just plain common sense requires that one do their own investigation of derma roller applicability to their singular skin issues. If there are questions or concerns, consulting a medical doctor is advisable as well.

Portable, easy and quick to use, some derma rollers are expected to need replacement every 3-6 months. Similar in price to the Derma Wand, these skin rollers could end up costing a bit more than the Derma Wand over a years time depending on individual usage. But you can also use the same derma roller on several different parts of your body for different skin problems. A bit more bang for the buck there.

While offering correction of numerous problematic skin conditions, both devices present exciting potential for facial and skin rejuvenation.

While both of these products address similar skin problems and offer excellent anti-aging protection, you will likely see more immediate and dramatic results with the Derma Wand. On the other hand, derma rollers, by actually penetrating the skin, present long term solutions for damaged skin that the Derma Wand doesnt address as readily. These micro needling rollers offer new hope for correction or improvement in several of our most tenacious and difficult skin problems like scars, stretch marks, hair thinning and cellulite.

As anti-aging, wrinkle and sagging skin reduction/removal devices, both products appear equally viable. Some minor discomfort and skin reddening is reported in derma roller use although applying Topacaine gel prior to use can remedy that issue. The Derma Wand elicits a tingling sensation in the skin the intensity of which can be adjusted by a small dial on the bottom of the device. Dont start out with maximum intensity and be sure to read the valuable instructions prior to use.

There are more restrictions and warnings about who should use a derma roller than there are with the Derma Wand. Obviously, for example, you wont want to use the skin roller on your lips or eyelids.

Youll also want to do further investigation regarding your unique skin challenges before jumping on the derma roller wagon.

Both facial devices are remarkably fast and simple to use. Three minutes in the am and pm work well for a Derma Wand lift. Similarly, a few minutes is all it takes for a derma roller treatment once a day or less. Both are non-invasive compared to traditional surgical face/skin procedures. Recovery times following treatment are non-existent for the Derma Wand and any facial reddening lasts for maybe an hour or so after skin rolling. Selling for or under $100 each, both of these products are extremely reasonably priced for the value and real results they provide.

We live in interesting times where we no longer need to struggle with the deterioration of our facial good looks. Is this all just the vanity of our culture? Not really. I dont know anyone who likes watching themselves age, helpless to prevent it. Not to say that there arent advantages to aging (someday Ill write about that) but how we look is strongly attached to how we feel about ourselves. Now, thanks to these devices, we have the power to control and ensure continuing to feel good about ourselves and the way we look.

U.S. ISPs to test restricting heavy Internet users

Thursday, June 5, 2008

On June 3rd, 2008, two United States Internet service providers (ISPs) announced they would begin tests to slow web access for their most active customers and charge them for extra speed. Comcast and Time Warner Cable, two of the largest ISPs in North America, both made separate announcements of their plans. The actions come in the wake of an investigation by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), over whether Comcast had restricted some customers from sharing videos, music, and similar files. The FCC investigation led to a US Congress debate over whether and how much control ISPs should have over the flow of customer data.

Public interest groups complained in November 2007 to the FCC that Comcast had specifically targeted customers using applications that made use of the BitTorrent system, a popular form of file sharing. Free Press, an advocacy group that pushes for better oversight of cable operators such as Comcast, stated that Comcast practices were discriminatory towards users of the legal technology. “The cable companies see a hammer hovering above their heads and are scrambling to find ways to reduce the appearance of wrongdoing,” said Ben Scott, head of the group.

According to Roger Entner, a senior vice president from Nielsen IAG, as little as 5 percent of all Internet users may consume as much as 50 percent of all the bandwidth on the Internet. “This is the politically correct version of doing what Comcast had been doing before, though it takes the occasional [peer-to-peer] user off the hook,” Entner said. Sena Fitzmaurice, a Comcast spokesperson, said, “This says we won’t be looking at what type of traffic that there is, even though we still need to manage the network.”

Comcast’s tests are expected to begin in Chambersburg, Pennsylvania and Warrenton, Virginia.

While Comcast will attempt to throttle the speed of all its high-volume users, Time Warner Cable intends to use a different method. They will meter and bill clients, charging more money for faster speeds and larger amounts of transmitted data, functioning more like a traditional public utility, such as an electric company or cell phone service. Their metered billing test will begin on June 5 in Beaumont, Texas for newly enrolled customers. “Instead of raising prices across the board, consumers who are excessive users would pay,” said Alex Dudley, a Time Warner Cable spokesman. “It is clearly the fairest way to fund the investment that is going to be required to support that use.”

An Associated Press report that Time Warner Cable will bill customers between $29.95 to $54.90USD per month has been confirmed by the cable operator, with clients charged an extra $1 for each gigabyte (GB) by which they exceed their purchased plan. Art Brodsky, communications director of Public Knowledge, a consumer advocacy group in Washington D.C., has expressed concerns about the Time Warner Cable plan. Time Warner Cable’s most expensive offering, $54.90, comes with 15 megabits-per-second of data transfer speed and a 40 gigabyte limit on total data transfer.

“An HD (high-definition) movie is 8GB or so, three movies is more than half your allowance for a month, and heaven knows what else you might want to watch,” Brodsky says. “This is not a relieving congestion scheme as much as it is a rationing scheme. All it does is protect an inadequate infrastructure from the cable company.”

Wikimania 2008: MediaWiki use in the U.S. Department of State

This article mentions the Wikimedia Foundation, one of its projects, or people related to it. Wikinews is a project of the Wikimedia Foundation.

Sunday, July 20, 2008

The last day of the Wikimania 2008 conference saw Saturday morning sessions on a variety of topics. Wikinews attended a presentation by Eric M. Johnson from the United States Department of State. Eric, a former NCO in the U.S. Marines, is the lead for the Knowledge Management Action team in the department’s Office of eDiplomacy, and involved in department’s use of Web 2.0 technologies for knowledge management. This includes blogs, and the key focus of his talk, Wiki culture in the U.S. Department of State.

Eric opened his presentation with an introduction to the U.S. State Department, one of the oldest agencies of the American government, which today has around 57,000 employees worldwide. When formed in the 18th century their offices and diplomatic staff operated largely autonomously due to lack of ability to communicate rapidly. By the mid-20th century this had changed with the advent of telegraph lines, and changed again with the Cold War and security concerns bringing to the fore the well-known term, “need to know”.

Now, in the 21st century, the volume of internal communication generated by the department is a staggering 1,800,000 cables a year, 1.5 billion emails, production of around 500,000 print volumes, and maintenance of approximately one thousand websites. Both internal and externally facing.

A pilot project was set up, Diplopedia, a MediaWiki wiki running on the department’s internal network, which outside of the department of defence is one of the largest private networks operated by the U.S. government.

A grassroots effort, this project to promote knowledge sharing differs from the well-known Wikipedia in that it does not allow anonymous edits. There are around 1,000 registered users who have contributed over 4,400 pages. Integration with the Department of State’s internal search engine prioritises results from the wiki, increasing the popularity of the site such that it has received over 650,000 page views. Like Wikipedia, users are required to provide sources for entered information at the foot of the article, and users are warned that it is a starting point and not an authoritative source of information. Data on visa requirements and information from other static department sites has been incorporated into the wiki.

Eric described the project as just reaching critical mass and attracting increasing interest from other departments. Among the ingredients leading to the success of the project were the cultural change with increasing awareness of the technology from Wikipedia, the formation by the community of a welcoming committee, and the taking on of roles to carry out tasks such as drafting. A number of staff act as “gardeners” tending to the wiki content, keeping it fresh, and well cross-referenced. The continual updating is a novel concept to many of their employees.

Unlike Wikipedia, and many other projects using MediaWiki, none of the Diplopedia pages are locked or protected. This even includes their main page. To date there have been none of the content disputes that have been an issue on Wikipedia, and the use of the wiki to replace traditional websites which are far more time consuming to maintain is seen as a logical extension of the project.

Carried out with no outside help, and by learning from others’ mistakes, the department has adopted mechanisms for assuming that contributions are well-intentioned, and has a body for oversight in the event of a dispute.

With the success of the project, eDiplomacy plans to introduce a separate, classified wiki. They will also expand the effort to compile biographies of foreign leaders, which was pioneered by the U.S. missions in Italy and Germany. This effort has proven valuable when combined with a version of the site available on portable devices such as the Blackberry.

The future holds moves to seek more support from management and integration with their primary authentication system. Among the features on the main page to keep the project interesting to staff is a “Diploquiz” which poses a weekly trivia question which can be answered from somewhere within the wiki.

DirecTV tunes out Trio, network in limbo

Saturday, January 1, 2005

The future of the artsy Trio channel became increasingly grim Saturday as satellite TV giant DirecTV dropped the fledgling network from its national channel lineup.

When DirectTV programmers threw the off switch at 6 a.m. eastern standard time Jan. 1, Trio, an NBC Universal-owned cable television channel, lost two-thirds of its 20 million household subscribers. The channel’s remaining 8 million subscribers may not give it enough audience to ensure its survival, according to some experts.

The network received critical acclaim for a quirky lineup that includes the series, Brilliant But Cancelled, which took American broadcast networks, including parent NBC, to task for cancelling quality programs.

Trio originally got its start in the 1980s as a Canadian cable channel owned by the CBC. Its original slate was described as “a general entertainment channel that features the most successful contemporary dramas, documentaries and films from Canada, the UK and Australia. For the last six years, TRIO has been the largest exporter of Canadian TV programs to the US with over 3,000 hours of content,” according to CBC press releases.

The channel’s Canadian roots were cut in 2000 when media mogul Barry Diller snapped up Trio and sister channel News World International from the CBC and partner Power Corp. for $155 million in cash. Diller saw the channel as a cheap consolation prize after he was outbid by NBC for the Bravo cable network earlier that year. Within months, Diller rebranded Trio, dumped the Canadian dramas and geared it more toward edgier pop culture programming.

Over the next couple of years, Trio changed hands twice. First to Vivendi Universal, then to NBC in a package deal that landed the American TV network a movie studio and the USA and SCI FI cable networks. Trio was seen as more of an afterthought at the time.

In a hint of what may be the fate of the channel, NBC Universal moved most of Trio’s executive and programming staff over to Bravo, a now-sibling network, which is seen in 80 million U.S. homes. Some experts predict that Trio will eventually be folded with its more successful programming ported over to Bravo.

“Trio was a refreshing oasis on the dial, with a quirky pop-culture attitude that showed in its programming. Trio leaving is kind of like having a witty friend move out of town,” Gael Fashingbauer Cooper, MSNBC television critic said in her weekly column. “It’ll be missed.”

NBC Universal has not commented publicly on the long-term future or specific plans for Trio channel besides to say it was committed to programming the network for current subscribers as the conglomerate re-evaluates its digital cable strategy.

PostHeaderIcon What Is Compulsive Eating?

Click Here For More Specific Information On:

By Jack L Bloom

Simply defined, compulsive eating is addiction to food. But more than just overeating, it has some psychological effects on a person, making them feel guilty and shameful of eating too much. Compulsive eating is an eating disorder that makes a person overweight, while going through a series of complications both physically and mentally.

Compulsive eating disorders affect a person’s life and well being in different ways. The worst situation that you can be into is endangering your life after your social and psychological lives are ruined. However, you are not alone and the good news is many of them have recovered from this devastating crisis. All you need to do is to submit yourself to early professional help.

Once you decided to seek the help of a doctor, you have to let go and let him know about the real root of the problem. Doing so removes the barrier between you and your doctor. This is the most crucial step in order to ensure your fast recovery. Your doctor cannot do much unless he has the full knowledge of what your problem is about.

Signs and symptoms

YouTube Preview Image

The first tell-tale sign of compulsive eating is binge eating or eating uncontrollably. But after satisfying one’s self in his meal, the same person goes through a strict diet, may even fast or skip meals, involve in rigorous exercises, and could force himself to vomit, just to remove the food he had eaten in his stomach. The use of laxatives after eating is yet another sign of compulsive eating.

Psychologically, compulsive overeater becomes too concerned with their body weight and tends to go through mood swings and depressions because of it. Physically, they would experience irregular periods and would develop dental problems, heartburn, and swollen cheek glands. They would feel bloated after every meal and may develop problems with drugs, alcohol, or the family.

Complications

Compulsive overeaters eventually develop hypertension due to their weight concerns. They would also get tired easily, even after simple exercises and physical activities. Weight gain will be apparent among them, while experiencing nausea off and on. People who tend to be compulsive eaters are also more prone to developing diseases such as cancer, high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Causes

Compulsive eating have many causes. Psychiatrists say that it could stem out of emotional conflicts, making the person turn to food for relief instead. It starts gradually until a person’s eating patterns have been changed completely. It may start during childhood. Children who turn to food or are given food to ease their tantrums and distress tend to develop compulsive eating disorder when they grow up. Generally speaking, this disorder is apparent to people who uses food as a therapy to ease their problems, loneliness, and frustrations.

Treatment

Professional help is required for people diagnosed to be compulsive overeaters. They need to consult with a psychiatrist and submit to a series of therapy and counseling. Studies have shown that talk therapy can treat a compulsive eater, while giving him nutritional and medical counseling. Counselors try to redirect a compulsive eater’s attention from food as he solves his problems. With the right orientation, the person would then start addressing problems in the face rather than hiding under a pile of food.
